US Catholic Bishops Ban Reiki, and this is What I Know:
This is in response to the report regarding the US Catholic Bishops ban on Reiki, link HERE.
As the article shares: “There is a radical difference between Reiki therapy and the healing by divine power in which Christians believe: for Christians the access to divine healing is by prayer to Christ as Lord and Savior, while the essence of Reiki is not a prayer but a technique,” the bishops said in a statement.
And this is what I know: Reiki has roots in mysticism and the Japanese art of Qi gong. Reiki is not a technique. It is an attuning to/alignment/amplification of the energy that we and all the universe are made up of, –and for someone who believes God is permeating the universe and also beyond it (panentheism) then, that universal life force is Sacred and a living, flowing part of God. Jesus came from God. Jesus’ ability to heal was from God.
The first tenant of Reiki is that the flow of energy can do no harm. When sharing Reiki, we never use our wills, we are an instrument for the energy to flow through, and we are aligned with the greatest good, the common good and unconditional love. Faith is involved for those with a background or roots in faith. For them, Reiki is an extension of prayer and surrender to God. For secular Reiki folks and others, it is simply and wonderfully the chi flowing strong. Either way, the energy is always seeking balance and healing, just as our bodies are. It is a harmonious, complementary tool for healing. There is no superstition involved.
I am a Usui Reiki Master, and I have witnessed and experienced profound and lasting good results from this art.
“And then there’s the fact that “neither the Scriptures nor the Christian tradition as a whole speak of the natural world as based on ‘universal life energy’ that is subject to manipulation by the natural human power of thought and will,” the bishops said.”
“To use Reiki is to operate “in the realm of superstition, the no-man’s-land that is neither faith nor science,” the bishops warned, urging Catholic health-care institutions, retreats and chaplains to ditch the therapy, which originated in Japan in the 1800s.
And this is what I know-–Reiki is never shared in a manipulative or willful manner. If it is, it is no longer Reiki, but someone abusing their power. What the Bishops announced just isn’t true, or rather is a skewed interpretation of the art of Reiki. Moreover, Reiki could be likened most to St. Francis’ prayer, “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.”
Reiki is able to relieve pain from growing pains to chemotherapy (and many other challenges and pains of the body, mind and emotions) and gives a deep sense of peace and relaxation without any manipulation or intrusion to the body. Another key point is that Reiki empowers those who give and receive it. Just as Jesus sought to heal and empower all whom he met and came into relationship with, Reiki elicits some of the same gifts.
In addition to this, one of those US Catholic Bishops (in Madison, WI) recently fired a woman in a masters program for writing a paper encouraging inclusive language for the Church.
These are good examples of why I left the Catholic Church. Still my heart is and has always been catholic, with a little ‘c’. While I love many people who are Catholic– they are my family, friends and beloved community members–and it is a part of my foundation, –it is no longer my home–and I look at this development with great sadness and disappointment all the same. I am glad to have stepped away from the oppressive, steel hold of the Catholic Hierarchy. For me, it was like staying in an abusive home. It is not like that for everyone, it is for me.
I feel huge gratitude and cherish my ecumenical community here. Many people will simply ignore the Bishops. Others will follow their decree without questioning. That’s how it is. I wanted to offer what I know about Reiki, because it is important.
I am simply a Christian now, who believes in an ecumenical world and faith life. I am affiliated with Catholics, I attend a Lutheran congregation, I practice Reiki, and I learn from other faith traditions as well. Maybe I don’t really belong anywhere perfectly. Maybe I am on the fringes. I think I always have been. It is alright to be just that. Jesus was on the fringes. It can be a sacred place to be.
I have witnessed countless miracles of healing and good fruits from Reiki, this is what I truly know. There is no denying, in my realm of experience, that Reiki is from and of God, the living God, who I trust my life with. I have received too many affirmations to deny this. If I did, it would be a grave denial of the Holy Spirit, and I will not do that. I offer my love and prayers to my friends and family who are Catholic or not, and to all who are effected by these kinds of decisions.
What a great post you have here. When someone challenges my beliefs about Reiki (or whatever else it may be) I tend to get flustered and am unable to stand up for myself. You did a great job of doing just that while keeping composed and not bashing someone’s beliefs. Thank you so much for this post!
Thank you Lindsay, and you are welcome. I am glad this is helpful.

Calling all Reiki people — we need to send Reiki healing to the Bishops Council. They are certainly misinformed and, hopefully, healing energy can help them to reevaluate their position on Reiki
I was born a Catholic but, over the years, I have become so disillusioned by the exclusive nature of Catholic Church doctrine. To be christian means to be Christ-like which, in my mind, means to be inclusive, accepting all people and to be loving and open to others’ points of view. Banning Reiki, especially in light of the Council’s lack of understanding of the nature of Reiki, does not seem to be Christ-like in any way.
Reiki, through divinely-guided touch provides the receiver (and the giver) with God’s loving and healing energy — it is prayer in motion. I am a Reiki master/teacher, I am a very spiritual person with a wonderful God-connection. I am sending continual healing Reiki energy to the bishops until they reevaluate their position on Reiki.
With all due respect Kathy,
it is unethical to send Reiki to people who do not wish to receive it.

Thank you for your thoughts, Chandra but I view Reiki as prayer in motion and I believe we can send divinely guided Reiki energy to anyone or any situation that we feel needs healing. We send it with love and good intention and trust that when the recipient is ready to receive it, he or she will.
Kathy,
I agree, Reiki can be sent ethically– to heal situations, with the focus for the common good,
the greater good in position –rather than our wills. However, there is an important differentiation
in this: sending Reiki in the hopes of
bending someone’s will or minds to agree with our own, doesn’t ring true for me. I trust that
your intentions and purpose are good, but it walks that ethical line that I am not comfortable
with. I certainly pray for healing and understanding between peoples and religions. No doubt.
And the main issue with the Bishops is that their information was gathered mainly from the web and involved
no interaction with Christians, Catholics or others who actually practice Reiki. Their decisions seems
rash and mis-informed at best. A great disappointment.
We each need to listen to our own hearts and walk with the ethical standards we each live by. For me, that is being
open, but never offering Reiki -in any form- to those who have clearly said no. To do otherwise,
is to disrespect free will and privacy and turns Reiki into something it is not.
Prayer is different. Prayer can be offered regardless. I am glad to have this conversation with you about this, and thank
you for your interest in my posting and offering. Sorry we do not see eye to eye, but wish you the best regardless.
I also want to say, that I share empathy with you regarding your spiritual journey in relationship to the Patriarchy. Wishing you and each of us peace, love and healing.
Namaste,
Chandra
I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have been struggling with some other actions of the Catholic Church and this one sits no better. I have always believed that religion is a social organization, while faith is a belief and communion with God. I am a Christian, but I wonder if the church is, it seems as though they have lost all concept of what Christ came here to teach us. I will not deny my truths, the Holy Spirit has given them to me and I will not betray her.
What a great post. Thanks for sharing this information. There seems to be many souls living ‘on the fringes’ as you put it. I too, left the Catholic church some years ago. My free will was repressed to such an extent that I had no idea who I was at all, what was ok to say and when it was ok to say it.
With the holy spirit’s guidance I am now able to find truth within. What a freedom this is.
It is only now, in hindsight, that I can thank the Catholic church for pushing me so hard against the wall that I had to look so deep within my troubled heart, mind and soul, that eventually I found truth and love – inside me. This is where real power is, inside me via the holy spirit. Would I have searched so deeply if not for the Catholic church?
I do not actively participate in healing face to face. Intead, I heal myself that my perception may be healed. If I have a problem with someone, the problem is actually within me.
We feed our own unique perception by paying attention to our own unique perception. Our attention then gives more power to what we are paying attention to. The object of our attention is affected by our paying attention to it. So we can feed the Catholic churches bidding by saying they are wrong, or we can bring ourselves back into alignment, healing our perception, and loving ourselves, thereby healing what is not in alignment with the greater good of all.
As everything in the Universe is actually inside me, the healing needs to begin right there – inside of me – through my perception. This is what my focus is – to heal myself and my perception. Only then can others heal and align with love – by me focusing the healing on myself. (This is another ancient healing system called Ho’oponopono).
Perhaps instead of standing up for our beliefs when we feel they are being attacked, we could thank them for their sharing their beliefs, and thank the Divine for sending them to show us we need to heal ourselves again today. I know who I Am, that I Am a Divine spark of the Universe, but when I need to defend myself, it is usually because I have forgotten – who I Am.
My prayer for healing myself – “Please forgive me for forgetting,” (it is done) “thank you, I love you”.
In gratitude,
Jules
Thank you Jules, so much for your sharing and support. Well said. Indeed, I am thankful for the opportunity the Bishops presented me/us with, so that I was pressed to say just what Reiki means to me and to others. The result is a clarification and gift. I also respect that Reiki is not for everyone. I definitely hold gratitude and respect for the Catholic church in numerous ways, despite the fall out as well. You bring up such important wisdom about responding, healing and perceiving. Thank you. Namaste.
